Clinical Analysis of 500 Cases of Open Heart Surgery

Abstract
Five hundred cases of open heart surgery were performed in the department of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery of Sejong General Hospital from January 1983 to August 1985.

There were 376 congenital cardiac anomalies and 120 acquired heart diseases and 4 redo cases. Out of 376 cases of congenital heart disease, 272 cases were acyanotic and 104 cases were cyanotic con-genital heart disease.
In acyanotic group,180 VSD, 54 ASD, 12 PDA, 11 PS, 6 AVSD, 5 AS and 4 other cardiac anomalies were included. In cyanotic group, 87 TOF, 6 trilogy, 4 TGA, 4 pulmonary atresia, 3 Ebstein¢¥s anomaly and 2 UVH were included.
All acquired heart diseases were valvular diseases except one case of left atrial myxoma and one case of ascending aortic aneurysm. They were 86 cases of single valve disease, 42 cases of double valve diseases and one case of triple valve disease.
The post-operative mortality was 4.8% in acyanotic group, 16.3% in cyanotic group and 10.8% in acquired heart disease. The overall mortality was 8.6%.
